Until recently, the way we used energy in our homes and other buildings wasn't a major concern. Gas, oil and electricity were all relatively cheap. The UK had ample energy resources because of North Sea oil and gas, plus plenty of coal reserves. There were some concerns about atmospheric pollution, with problems such as Acid Rain, but these were thought to be manageable.
In the last few years this picture has changed dramatically. The UK now faces the 'triple threat' of Climate Change, Low Energy Security, and High Energy Costs. All of these are powerful reasons for this country to cut the amount of energy it wastes, and generate the remainder in different ways.
Global Warming
Global Warming, or Climate Change, is the greatest threat that we face. If we carry on our current trajectory of energy consumption we face some terrible consequences, such as widespread flooding from rising sea levels, food shortages, and mass migrations. Climate Change is something we are all responsible for, and something we will all need to work against. Click here to read more
UK Energy Security
At the same time, the UK's production of oil and gas is now in decline, meaning we are more and more dependant on imports from places like Russia and the Middle East. As well as funding some bad governments around the world, we are also vulnerable if they decide to turn the tap off, as has happened recently. Click here to read more.
Rising Prices
Finally, the financial cost of energy is rising, hitting all of us in the pocket. World oil prices have reached levels that weren't imagined even a few years ago, with gas prices also following in their footsteps. This in turn has made electricity much more expensive. With developing economies needing more and more energy, and supplies struggling to keep up, expensive energy looks here to stay. Click here to read more about what this costs you
All 3 of the above points are compelling reasons for each of us to act now to conserve as much energy as possible, and source what we do use from cleaner sources. Follow this link back to our Home Page to find out how you can take action.
