Boiler efficiency is measured by the percentage of fuel they convert to heat. An easy efficiency rating scheme has been introduced for boilers in the UK, similar to the one that exists for electric appliances such as fridges and washing machines. It rates a boiler on a scale from A to G, with A being the most efficient, and G the least efficient. The scheme is called SEDBUK (Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK) and represents the average annual efficiency achieved in normal domestic conditions. The scheme is temporary as it will be withdrawn when a European directive on boiler energy labelling is introduced.
You should always look for the SEDBUK rating of any boiler you are thinking about buying, and always go for the most efficient models (rated ‘A'). These boilers are more than 90% efficient. This means that you will pay lower fuel costs year after year, and also reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions you are responsible for.
