System boilers (otherwise known as ‘heat-only' boilers) are a type of condensing boiler. This type falls in between Combi boilers and Regular boilers, and has some of the advantages of both, while avoiding some of the disadvantages of both.
Systems boilers store hot water in a hot water tank in the same way as a Regular boiler. However, they have some of the other components of a Regular boiler system built into the boiler. They also take their water directly from the mains. This means, for example, that you don't need a cold water or feed and expansion tank in the attic any more.
Advantages of a System Boiler
One of the big advantages is that it requires less space than a Regular boiler system, because it has some components already built into the boiler. You will save space in the attic because you don't need a separate cold water or feed and expansion tank. You can therefore use the space for something else, like extra living space or storage.
Because it has less separate components to the heating system, the System boiler is also easier to install and maintain.
However, because it stores hot water in a hot water tank, you get some of the advantages of a Regular boiler system from a System. For example, you can use it in areas with low water pressure. It is also suitable for homes that are larger and where you need to use hot water in more than one place at once - so you can get hot water for a shower while someone else is doing the washing up.
Disadvantages of a System Boiler
The main disadvantage is that you need to space for a hot water tank. Also they can cost slightly more to run than Combi boilers because they lose heat from the hot water tank. However as discussed above, this provides benefits in terms of hot water flow rate.
Should you choose a System boiler?
System boilers are good for homes that need to use hot water at several different points at once, or which have low water pressure. However they can cost more to run, and do take up more space in the house.
A boiler is a major investment and it is worth getting the advice of a professional installer that you can trust. They can also tell you which makes and models you should consider, and how large the boiler will need to be to service your home, and how much it will all cost.
