Combi boilers, (often called ‘combination boilers'), are a type of condensing boiler. They are the most popular type, accounting for over half of new boiler sales in this country. They are called ‘Combination' boilers because they combine the production of hot water for your taps with the hot water needed for your central heating system.
Advantages of a Combi Boiler
Combi boilers have a lot of advantages. To begin with they can be more energy efficient because they produce hot water on demand rather than storing previously heated hot water, which then loses heat. They also heat hot water directly from the cold mains, which gives it a good pressure. This means that you can have a powerful shower without needing a pump (if you live in an area with good mains pressure).
One of the main advantages is that they also save space. They don't need a hot water tank in an airing cupboard, because they heat water on demand. Because they take water straight from the mains they also don't need a cold water tank in the loft.
Things that may make a Combi boiler unsuitable
If you live in an area with low mains water pressure then a Combi boiler might not give you enough hot water on demand because it is fed directly from the cold mains. You will need to check that the water pressure in your home exceeds the minimum required for any Combi boiler model. Similarly if you have the need for a lot of hot water in one go, for example because you have 2 or more bathrooms, then you may also want to consider a ‘System' or ‘Regular' boiler. This is because the amount of hot water from a Combi at any one moment is limited. Particularly in Winter, the hot water flow rate is not likely to be as good as for a boiler that uses a hot water storage tank.
Should you choose a Combi boiler?
Combi boilers are best for most, but not all homes. The instant hot water and space saving are attractive, but it's not great if you are having a shower and the hot water is being used in another bathroom or the kitchen.
A boiler is a major investment and it is worth getting the advice of a professional installer that you can trust. They can also tell you which makes and models you should consider, and how large the boiler will need to be to service your home, and how much it will all cost.
